WHAT DO NORWALK DEMOCRATS DO?

Local Democrats nominate candidates for City, State, and national office, support election campaigns, follow public issues year-round, and speak out for fairness, openness, and good sense in government policy and legislation.

Nominate Candidates
District committees recommend candidates for district offices to the Town Committee, which makes official party endorsements for all elected municipal positions.

Candidates for the office of State Representative, from State districts that are entirely within Norwalk, are endorsed by caucuses open to all registered Democrats.

Candidates for other state or federal offices are nominated by conventions for each post. Convention delegates are endorsed by the Town Committee on the basis of district committee recommendations.

All endorsements for nominations and convention delegates may be contested in primary elections.

Support Election Campaigns
In odd numbered years, there are municipal elections in Norwalk. The Mayor and Common Council members run for two-year terms. Board of Education members run for four-year terms, on a staggered basis. In even numbered years, there are state and national elections.

Norwalk Democrats pitch in at dozens of tasks such as:
  • Issue Research
  • Advertising
  • Organizing public meetings
  • Registering new voters
  • Helping candidates campaign
  • Running phone banks
  • Getting voters to the polls
  • Preparing voter mailings
  • Staffing party headquarters
  • Working at the polls
Social and Fund-Raising Events
In recent years we've had a Pasta Dinner, an autumn champagne brunch with appearances by prominent candidates, and a thank-you party for election volunteers in January (when we're rested again).

WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED?

Because it's good to belong to an organization with a purpose. And because there is real satisfaction in making new friends and working shoulder-to-shoulder with them for better government and sound, humane public policy.

Come to the next meeting of your Democratic district committee. Call Democratic Town Chair Galen Wells at (203) 866-9045 for meeting information.

You'll find neighbors waiting to welcome you.

HOW IS THE PARTY ORGANIZED?

District Committees
District Committees in each municipal voting district meet monthly, often for programs on issues of current interest. Membership is open to any registered Democrat. You can become a member after attending three meetings within a twelve-month period. Regular attendance maintains your voting rights. Each committee elects officers (See District Meetings).

The municipal voting districts are:
  1. Central Norwalk
  2. South Norwalk
  3. East Norwalk, Strawberry Hill and Wolfpit
  4. Cranbury, West Rocks and Silvermine
  5. West Norwalk, Brookside and Rowayton
Town and City Committee
The Norwalk Democratic Town and City Committee is the central, citywide Democratic body. It has 35 members (the registered Democrats of each district elect seven members to two-year terms).

The Town and City Committee meets monthly. Meetings are open to all Democrats, though only the members may vote.

The Committee elects from its membership a Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary.
