State Rep. Chris Perone Announces Approval of 529 College Savings Plan Bill by Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee

State Representative Chris Perone (D-Norwalk) announces today that the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee approved a Fiscal Year 2007 legislative bonding package that includes the 529 College Savings Plan bill co-sponsored by Rep. Perone. Rep. Perone has been working with State Treasurer Denise Nappier’s office since January on this proposal to help Connecticut families save for college through a tax deduction on contributions to the state college savings program. The legislation would allow individuals to deduct up to $5,000 of contributions, while joint filers could deduct as much as $10,000.
The package will now be considered by the General Assembly.
"It's time for the state of Connecticut to do more to help families who are working hard to provide for their children’s college education," said Rep. Perone. "Other states offer this deduction, including New York, and Connecticut needs to offer the same benefit for its residents. The proposed legislation would establish a state income tax deduction for contributions to CHET, Connecticut's 529 College Savings Program."
