Rep. Morris Calls For Prevention Funding
State Rep. Chris Perone Mar. 21, 2007 State Representative Bruce Morris, co-sponsor of House Bill 6274: An Act Appropriating Funds for the Amer-I-Can Foundation for Social Change, pledged his support for $1 million in state funding for the New England Amer-I-Can program, a human development organization. "As an employee of the Norwalk Public School system, we need programs like this to make a difference in the lives of our youth," said Rep. Morris. "It is imperative that the state steps in to provide preventive programs for our youth and aid in the relief of local school budgets. This program can help a child choose the right path in life." Founded in 1988 by Jim Brown, the former Cleveland Browns running back who led the National Football League (NFL) in rushing for a record eight seasons, the Amer-I-Can program seeks to equip troubled youth with greater self-esteem and the tools to overcome obstacles and achieve full potential. Rep. Morris also stated, "Amer-I-Can has proven it can intervene in young, at risk lives and affect positive outcomes." From 1998 to 2002, the Amer-I-Can program worked with high schools in six Connecticut cities. Of the 1,122 students who completed the program, absences dropped by 27%, grade point averages (GPA's) rose 18% and participant schools saw a 73% decrease in disciplinary incidents. Funding for Amer-I-Can was discontinued in Connecticut due to budget constraints. The City of Norwalk is slated to receive $200,000 in state funding if this bill passes. Rep. Morris is serving his first term in the Connecticut General Assembly. He is a member of the Housing, Human Services, and Judiciary Committees. ### |
